Hair is formed with protein fiber having alpha-keratin, which develops from follicles (which is the only "living" portion of the hair) to dermis in mammals. It consists of the medulla (innermost region), cortex (contains melanin), and cuticle (covered with a single molecular layer of lipid that makes the hair repel water). The follicle shape determines the cortex's shape, and the fiber shape is indicated to how straight (having round hair fibers) and curly or more wavy (having oval and other shaped fibers) the hair is. All natural hair colors are the result of hair pigments which produced in follicle and packed into granules found in the fibers. Eumelanin is the presiding pigment of brown and black hair and pheomelanin for red hair. Blond hair is having little pigmentation in the hair strand and gray hair is the result of decreases or stops of melanin production. The body has different types of hair in everywhere on the external body with its own type of cellular construction except for mucus membranes and glabrous skin, such as that found on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and lips. Hair follows a specific growth cycle with three phases (anagen, catagen and telogen) which dominant specific unique characteristics, determine the length of the hair, serving specific purposes, mainly, warmth and protection. Hair show an individual's beliefs, social position such as their age, sex, or religion.
